Why teaching African-American history is important
Dealing with bigotry |
Today, our children are bombarded with images from a variety of sources. Many times they are left to draw their own conclusions when facing the questions that these images generate. The Gloryworks mission is to provide positive information to help counter the multitude of negative information that aids in the promotion of racism and bigotry. The images and articles on this and the following pages are examples of some of the negative information that we may deal with on a daily basis. Our purpose in presenting it is to underscore the importance of supporting positive endeavors that deal with the issue of bigotry.

Racism in Superman comics |
||||||||||||||
In 1993, we became aware of a series of issues of the Superman comics that introduced a character who was a self-proclaimed racist. We were not comfortable with the dialogue of the character. The following are some of the clips that appeared in the Superman DC Comic issues from 1993 to 1995. We stopped following the issues after 1995. We do not know if the character has been discontinued.

In this panel the villain states
"That's why this race war won't ever be won by you ni-- The villain is talking to a black man of whom he was about to destroy with a weapon that he has just dropped. You will have to assume what word is intended by the "Ni--". |

These panels and others like them appeared in the DC Comics Superman issues 507-39 December 1993, 526-32 August 1995, 694 December 1993, 47-30 August 1995.
I have come across other panels in other comic books. We often take for granted as to what kind of material our children are being exposed to. In today's world where children have access to so much material through the internet and other sources, we have a responsibility to make sure that we are presenting them with positive material by which they can develop wholesome philosophies. The Gloryworks Experience is a tool that is available to you to help you address these types of problems.
